Technically it’s a fruit. But we treat it like a veggie, so that’s why it’s here. When you can make a little dent in it with your finger it’s ripe for consumption. Hard avocados ripen quicker in a paper bag along with a banana.
ADD SOME LEMON
The light green color stays green if you sprinkle it with some lemon juice. This makes it healthier too as the iron in avocado is better absorbed with the extra vitamin C from the lemon.
Most kids love homemade guacamole – and if not, disguise avocado in a smoothie or mix it up in a soup like Warm Grass. Most prefab avocado dips hardly contain any avocado, so you’re better off without those.
WHAT MAKES AVOCADO SPECIAL?
Since avocados don’t grow a label, here are some nutritional highlights: avocados contain unsaturated fats that are heart healthy and lower cholesterol. Their smoothness disguises that they are filled with fiber. They’re also a good source of vitamin C and contain a fair share of vitamin K and folate.
